Programs and Services

  • RVSD Special Education Instructional Programs offer a full range of services to meet the needs of students with several different disabilities.

Specialized Instruction < 50% of the Day

Students may receive specialized instruction from the Resource Specialist within the general education classroom or in the resource classroom in specific skills. Students may receive support up to 50% of the day and benefit from some general education instruction.  There are Resource programs on all district campuses.

Specialized Instruction > 50% of the Day

These classes are district programs and are not located at all schools. The student will receive intensive specialized instruction and services more than 50% of the day using alternative materials for English Language Arts and Mathematics.  Many students will participate in general education in some content areas with accommodations and/or modifications when feasible, and in non-academic activities such as art, music, physical education, library, recess, lunch and other social activities.

    Related Services

These services are determined by the IEP team.  These services are supplemental services that are necessary for a student to benefit from their special education program.  These services may include but are not limited to the following:

    • Speech and Language therapy
    • Counseling
    • Behavior support services
    • Occupational therapy
    • Physical therapy
    • Adapted Physical Education
    • Transportation

    Extended School Year Program (ESY)

These services are recommended by the IEP team for students with special needs who require specialized instruction to maintain skills in excess of the school year.  Without these services, the students would experience significant regression. Typically ESY occurs during the four (4) weeks immediately following the end of the school year.

    Early Intervention Speech

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) establishes that children can become eligible for Special Education services at three years of age. RVSD provides Speech and Language services on a district campus to students who meet eligibility criteria.

Marin County Office of Education (MCOE)

These are regional programs and services for students with special needs and are located at various school sites throughout the county. RVSD partners with MCOE to provide services for students ages 3-14 when they require a more intensive program than the District can provide.
